The Degrees of Audio (In)Visibility
The Degrees of Audio (In)Visibility
For years, interior designers looked at technology as an eyesore, a necessary evil to be dealt with in luxury residential projects. But those days are long gone. Today, we have a ton of fantastic speaker options for every fit, finish, and audio quality level. Some are smaller, some are cleverly camouflaged, and some are completely invisible. If you want incredible sound without sacrificing your home’s aesthetic, here are a few of our favorites.
The Modern In-Ceiling Speaker
Even the old standby architectural speaker has evolved to be much more attractive. Today’s in-ceiling speakers come in 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch variations, can be round or square, and feature micro-perforated grilles with a bezel so small it is barely there. They can be custom-painted to perfectly match your ceiling paint, making blending a breeze. Best of all, they sound fantastic and are built to last for years.
The Small-Aperture Speaker
This is one of my personal favorites. As modern downlights have gotten smaller, traditional 6-inch or 8-inch speakers can look bulky on a ceiling next to a sleek 3-inch light fixture. Small-aperture speakers typically feature a 3-inch opening, meaning the speaker and the downlight match in scale. This creates what we call a quiet ceiling, which is a much cleaner look for a modern home.
In the past, going small was a bummer for audio quality because the speakers could not produce low-end bass. Today’s premium models solve this by hiding the bass-producing elements up in the ceiling joists, leaving only the mid-frequency and high-frequency components visible while still delivering a rich, full range of sound.
The Invisible Speaker
We recently installed a pair of these in our showroom, and they are always a crowd-pleaser. Invisible speakers have been around for a while, but they did not always sound great. These days, the audio quality rivals a high-quality mid-range architectural speaker, but with zero visual footprint. They are mounted flush, skim-coated directly into the drywall, and finished with the exact same paint or texture as the rest of the wall. You get wide-dispersion, excellent sound, and completely seamless walls and ceilings.
The Hidden Soundbar
Display TVs like the Samsung Frame look beautiful on the wall, but standard soundbars have not always kept up with those design improvements. Luckily, you do not have to compromise. Brands like Leon and James Loudspeaker create custom soundbars built to match the exact width, finish, and contour of your specific TV. Leon even builds custom grilles and media furniture for traditional Sonos soundbars to integrate them beautifully into your interior design.
The Hidden Subwoofer
To get that deep, movie-theater bass, you need a large speaker, which used to mean a giant, ugly box sitting on your floor. Not anymore. We now have incredible architectural subwoofer options. Brands like Sonance and JL Audio offer in-wall subwoofers that tuck completely into the wall cavity, leaving only a small, flush grille exposed. We also love the James Loudspeaker PowerPipe series, which can be hidden entirely inside a closet or custom cabinet, porting the bass into the room through a tiny, unobtrusive vent. You get all the impact of high-end bass with none of the clutter.
